Research
What We Discovered
As the second most diverse state in the U.S., New York City is a global epicenter where millions of professionals and cultures converge. By leveraging the NYPL’s collection of over 55 million items.
It is an opportunity to transform the app from a simple library into a community and resource hub that fosters cultural engagement and professional collaboration for every New Yorker.
User Research
Listening to the Community
User research revealed not only how people interact with the NYPL app, but also where they struggled the most. By mapping out these pain points, clear patterns began to emerge, which were developed into personas that brought the users’ voices into every stage of the design process.
Empathy Interviews
Voices & Frustrations
The process of logging in and registering multiple times feels like a waste of time.
NYPL has many resources, but the sheer amount of affiliated sites makes it hard to keep track of all the resources I gather.
The most important thing would be ease of use.
Want to hear other professional’s voices and network.
It looks really outdated.
Affinity Mapping
Finding the Patterns in Data

Community
Users crave engagement. They want to discuss findings, interact with peers, and participate in library events alongside their families.
Personalization
Needed recommendations of books, resources for their interests, and also felt there is a lack of customization.
Accessibility
An easy way to access materials and keeping track of them, and all in one place. Too many steps, external sites that leads to frustrations.

It would be nice if I could personalize the app more. ✍️

I couldn’t really tell what each icon meant. 🤔

Takeaways
What I Learned
Let research lead, not assumptions. Every feature we built traced back to a real user pain point. Good design starts with listening.
Structure creates clarity.
Design for behavior, not just function. A feature can work perfectly and still fail if it doesn't fit how people actually engage.
